An area on the south side of the Fayetteville square was closed to traffic Wednesday afternoon while authorities investigate a suspicious substance found near the square.
Police said the substance was found inside the desk of an employee who was recently fired from a business on the square. The officer did not name the specific business.
First responders on the scene tested the substance and found it to be protein-based, raising concerns that it could be a dangerous substance.
Hazmat crews from Springdale and Bentonville have also been called in for further testing.
