The annual MLK Freedom March began shortly after 11 a.m. Monday as a crowd gathered in Lot 56 near the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Razorback Road in Fayetteville.
This year’s event was sponsored by the Northwest Arkansas Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Council, the University of Arkansas, and the City of Fayetteville.
Participants sang and chanted while marching along Razorback Road through the University of Arkansas campus and to the Faulkner Performing Arts Center for the traditional noon vigil sponsored by the university’s Associated Student Government and the Black Students Association.
Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan joined famed scholar and activist Cornel West at the head of the parade, which traveled north along Razorback Road past Nolan Richardson Drive before turning east onto Meadow Street and then north onto Stadium Drive past Razorback Stadium en route to the performing arts center.
