Construction is underway on what city officials are calling the centerpiece of Centennial Park in south Fayetteville.

The new 228-acre park sits atop Millsap Mountain and includes mountain bike and running trails, and a world-class cyclocross course that’s set to host two high-profile racing events in the coming months.

Crews recently completed a new driveway entry and parking lot, and up next is the Centennial Park Pavilion that will serve as a central gathering point in the park, with restrooms and other amenities.

City Council members last September approved a $61,000 contract with Modus Studio to design the pavilion, and earlier this year awarded a $694,000 contract with Crossland Heavy Contractors to construct the 2,000-square-foot facility that will include three accessible restrooms and pavilion space.

Modus this week unveiled conceptual drawings and renderings of the project, along with a description of the work:

Its vertical light wells establish monuments for orientation within the park, while the overall form references the seven hills of Fayetteville and proposes Millsap Mountain as part of a secondary ring of significant hills within the expanded city.

Centennial Park was selected to be the site of the upcoming UCI Cyclocross World Championships in January 2022. It will be just the second time the United States has ever hosted the event, which was first held in 1950 in Paris, France.

The park will also host a UCI Cyclocross World Cup race on Oct. 13.

The events are being funded using a $3.7 million grant from the Walton Family Foundation.

Cyclocross is a unique type of competitive racing that combines the speed of road bike races with the terrain of mountain bike events. The 30- to 60-minute races are held on shorter, spectator-friendly courses in which racers typically hop off and carry their bikes up steep uphill sections or over various obstacles.
