NWA NAACP to host new ‘Equality Now’ 5K, fun run and health fair

The Northwest Arkansas NAACP will host the inaugural Equality Now 5K, fun run and health fair on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Veterans Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

The event is free to participate in and aims to raise awareness about health disparities and promote wellness for BIPOC individuals.

The 5K will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a health fair from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The health fair will feature free health screenings, information on healthy living, and resources for BIPOC individuals.

The NWA NAACP is encouraging the community to come out and support the event.

“We invite the Northwest Arkansas community to participate in this event to support scholarships and community initiatives that address equality and equity issues,” said Dr. Cody Davis, president of the NWA NAACP. “By participating, you can help us raise funds that will directly benefit our community. Let’s work together to promote healthy living, equality and make a positive impact in our community.”

Davis said the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light significant health inequities experienced by BIPOC individuals, from disproportionate hospitalizations due to the virus to wider health and well-being disparities. BIPOC community members, Davis said, face higher rates of chronic disease, pregnancy-related deaths, infant mortality, mental health issues, and other health concerns compared to their white counterparts.
