The Arkansas Cinema Society plans to kick off a new series of film screenings this weekend.

The group will host the first Movies + Music event featuring a screening of the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line this Sunday, May 21 at Walker Park.

In addition to the film screening, the event will include live music by local duo Smokey & The Mirror performing a set of Johnny Cash songs before the film. The idea, officials said, is to “explore films that have a strong music element–a documentary, a biopic, a musical or a prominent soundtrack–paired with live music related to the film’s subject.”

Music for the event starts at 6 p.m., and the film is set to begin after that.

Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon was released in 2005, and tells the story of country music legend and Arkansas native Johnny Cash, from his early days to his rise to fame as a Sun Records recording artist.

The event is free to attend, and sponsored by the City of Fayetteville Department of Parks, Natural Resources, and Cultural Affairs.
