Do you hear that sound? Us either. That’s the quiet that comes the first weekend after classes wrap up at the UA and the students make their way back home for the summer.
Despite the population change over the last few days, it’s still a pretty packed weekend of music, performances, and other community events.
If you’re reading this on Thursday, there may still be time to make it to Fancy Hour, the third Thursday event happening up on Mount Sequoyah this week. Here’s more on that.
Also on Thursday, there’s a big local show at George’s Majestic Lounge with local bands Bootleg Royale, Thru It All and Fight Dream. George’s has local rockers Full House for happy hour Friday, followed by another local band, Green Acres for late night. On Saturday, locals Mildenhall, Greyland, and Always Tired will perform, and there’s a metal show on Sunday with Goat Whore. Here’s ticket info for George’s shows.
JJ’s Live has a couple big shows this weekend with a Garth Brooks tribute called No Fences on Friday night, and Minnesota indie band Hippo Campus will perform on Saturday night. Tickets are here.
Walton Arts Center has a couple Artosphere-related event this weekend, including a performance by The Herbie Hancock Institute National Peer-to-Peer Jazz Sextet on Thursday, and the Artosphere Festival Orchestra will perform Respighi’s Roman Trilogy on Saturday.
Up north, there’s a big bluegrass festival happening in Bentonville this weekend with FreshGrass. This year’s event will feature performances by Elle King, The Del McCoury Band, Sierra Ferrell, Tank and the Bangas, and others on Friday night, and CAAMP, Mavis Staples, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Cimafunk and more on Saturday. Also in Benton County, comedian Pauly Shore is in town for a handful of performances at The Grove Comedy Club. It looks like all those performances are sold out.
There are a couple fun events in Fayetteville on Sunday. The Joe Martin Stage Race is happening all weekend, and the most spectator-friendly event is on Sunday with the criterium series of races around the Fayetteville square. In addition to that, a new event called All Wheels Welcome will take place to coincide with the races that will include adult big wheel races, skating and skateboarding exhibitions, a pottery wheel, RC car races, and other festivities. Here’s info on the Joe Martin Stage Race, and All Wheels Welcome will take place from noon until 4 p.m. in the lot behind the Visitors Center.
Also on Sunday, Arkansas Cinema Society will present a screening of Walk the Line that will also include performances of Johnny Cash songs by local band, Smokey & the Mirror at Walker Park. The event begins at 6 p.m. over near the splash pad.
