Multidisciplinary artist Dave Cole is working in northwest Arkansas on the world’s largest knitted American flag.

Using telephone poles as knitting needles and two large excavators as arms, Cole began orchestrating each purl and knit of the flag from a boom lift on Saturday. The process will finish with a special celebration from 7:30-9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4 on the art space grounds in downtown Bentonville.

Guests can drop by during the Independence Day celebration to witness Cole’s final stitches. The Knitting Machine and completed flag installation will remain on display at the Momentary through July 16.

The event is free to attend and open to the public. The Momentary is located at 507 SE E St in Bentonville.
