FAYETTEVILLE — A German Shepherd named Monroe was rescued by the Fire Department this week after falling through the ice at Lake Fayetteville.

The incident occurred on Thursday, Jan. 18 when emergency responders from Ladder 4 and Battalion 2 were dispatched for an ice rescue operation, according to a social media post from the department. The dog had chased ducks onto the ice and subsequently fell through about 75 yards from the shore.

Rescue personnel, donning protective gear, reached Monroe who was found in a state of distress. They managed to bring the dog to safety without injury. Monroe was then dried off and assessed for injuries before being handed back to the owner, the post stated.

Monroe is reported to be recovering well at home following the event.
