Update: The board voted 7-0 to approve the purchase of the Joyce Boulevard property at Tuesday’s special meeting.

The Fayetteville Board of Education has called a special meeting for 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 to discuss the purchase of property near the corner of Joyce Boulevard and Crossover Road for the construction of a relocated Woodland Junior High School.

The district entered into an agreement to purchase the property at 3134 E. Joyce Blvd. for $4.6 million in January.

Since then, officials have been been conducting traffic studies, geotechnical soil studies, and gathering other information as part of a 90-day due diligence period specified in the contract that expires on March 19.

The board is expected to review data from a geotechnical report prepared by MTA Engineers along with an engineering document prepared by Blew & Associates at Tuesday’s meeting.

The district earlier this month approved a proposal to organize schools into a “feeder pattern” that would keep students together from elementary school through high school. As part of the plan, Woodland Junior High would be relocated to east Fayetteville, and the new John L. Colbert Middle School would become a junior high school. Ramay Junior High would also eventually be moved to a new location.

Fayetteville superintendent John Mulford said at the March 1 board meeting that he has also been exploring alternate sites, and mentioned two unlisted but potentially available properties between 15-17 acres each near the corner of Gregg Avenue and Van Asche Drive as possibilities for the future Woodland location should the property on Joyce not work out.

Mulford is expected to recommend moving forward with the purchase of the property on Joyce, however, according to the agenda posted online.

The board meeting will take place in the Adams Leadership Center at 1000 W. Bulldog Blvd. The meeting will also be live-streamed on the FPS Board Meetings YouTube channel.
