The city will give away 100 bare root saplings in honor of Arkansas Arbor Day next week.

The giveaway will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, March 18 at the Gulley Park parking lot off East Township Street.

The giveaway is also in celebration of the city being named a Tree City USA for the 29th year in a row, along with a new addition to the Amazing Trees of Fayetteville program – a 60-year-old American Sycamore located at Gulley Park.

The city will give away two types of saplings – White Oak (Quercus alba) and Red Bud (Celtis canadensis).

In addition to the giveaway, city staff will be on hand to guide visitors to the 2024 Amazing Tree, located along Niokaska Creek inside the park.

The tree is the eighth to be selected for the Amazing Tree of Fayetteville program, chosen by the city’s urban forestry staff and the Urban Forestry Advisory Board.

“This sycamore has become a natural playground feature for visitors to climb and admire in the park,” said John Scott, the city’s urban forester.

The Amazing Tree program was created to recognize “significant trees and highlights the importance of trees in the city,” officials said.

Tree City USA is a program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in association with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
