Fayetteville Planning Commission / Government Channel
Fayetteville officials are looking to fill 21 positions on 13 of the city’s boards, commissions and committees.
The list of vacancies includes volunteer seats on the Active Transportation Advisory Committee, Civil Rights Commission, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and more.
All volunteers must be registered voters who reside within the Fayetteville city limits.
Applications must be mailed or hand delivered to the City Clerk’s office or emailed to [email protected] by 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13.

Active Transportation Advisory Committee (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One bicycle advocate term ending 12/31/19
Description:This committee reviews public comment, and advises city staff on the prioritization and land acquisition/easements for sidewalks and trails within Fayetteville. Members are also responsible for adopting sidewalk and trails master plans. Recommendations relating to trails are forwarded to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Recommendations relating to sidewalks are forwarded to the Transportation Division.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month in City Hall.
Airport Board (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One member at large term ending 12/31/22
Description: The purpose of this board is to seek both general and technical citizen input and assistance in airport functions, provide and encourage visionary planning and strong leadership for the airport, and assist the City Council in matters pertaining to the operation, improvement, extension, and maintenance of the Airport and other related facilities, property and easements.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Fayetteville Executive Airport Conference Room.
Audit Committee (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One CPA term ending 12/31/20
Description: The Audit Committee serves in an advisory capacity between the City Council, the city’s independent auditor, internal auditor, and management. The committee will review the city’s financial reports and internal controls regarding finance and accounting.
Meetings: The committee meets at least three times annually, or more frequently as circumstances dictate.
Civil Rights Commission (2 openings)
Seats available:
– One owner or manager of rental property term ending 12/31/20
– One human resources/employment law term ending 12/31/20
Description: The basic function of the commission is to ensure uniform nondiscrimination protections within the City of Fayetteville for groups already protected to varying degrees throughout state law.
Meetings: Meetings are held when needed at the call of the chairperson.
Energy Improvement District No. 1 (3 openings)
Seats available:
– One unexpired citizen at large term ending 12/31/19
– Two citizen at large terms ending 12/31/19
Description: Board members would oversee the district’s issuance of tax-exempt bonds and loaning of money to property owners using a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing. PACE is a creative financing mechanism that allows property owners to borrow money for weatherization, energy efficiency, renewable energy or water conservation improvements to their property. PACE enabling legislation was passed by the Arkansas Legislature in the 2013 session and signed by the Governor in April 2013.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every other month in City Hall.
Environmental Action Committee (2 openings)
Seats available:
– Two community citizen-at-large terms ending 12/31/20
Description: This committee works to address environmental concerns, to promote a safe and healthy environment, and to maintain the natural beauty of the environment within the city. It makes recommendations to other city committees and to the City Council.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in City Hall.
Fayetteville Arts Council (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One unexpired working artist term ending 6/30/19
Description: Helps define the community’s identity and sense of place, promote social interaction, bring the arts into everyday life and memorialize the past while expressing shared values for the future.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month in City Hall.
Historic District Commission (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One unexpired citizen at large term ending 6/30/18
Description: This commission recommends the establishment of historic districts to the City Council. Its basic function is to promote the educational, cultural, economic, and general welfare of the public through the preservation and the protection of buildings, sites, places and districts of historic interest.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the second Thursday every other month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One term ending 12/28/22
Description: The commissioners approve by-laws, resolutions, policies and procedures for administering housing programs for low income persons. The Housing Authority operates units of Public Housing and rental assistance in Fayetteville. Both programs are for low and very low income persons. All funds are provided through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Meetings: The board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month in City Hall.
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (3 openings)
Seats available:
– Three citizen at large terms ending 12/31/20
Description: This board recommends priorities for capital improvements and means for financing the same, and prepares an annual progress report on parks and recreation activities.
Meetings: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in City Hall. In addition to the regularly scheduled board meetings, there are committee meetings that occur on a regular basis.
Telecommunications Board (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One unexpired citizen at large term ending 06/30/18
Description: The board advises the City Council on telecommunication issues and coordinates and oversees telecommunications franchise systems and use of the public rights of way designated for public access, educational, and governmental (PEG) use in the City of Fayetteville as part of the city’s telecommunication infrastructure.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in Room 219 of City Hall.
Town and Gown Advisory Committee (1 opening)
Seats available:
– One unexpired University of Arkansas student living off campus term ending 09/30/19 appointed by the Mayor
Description: This committee advises the City Council and University of Arkansas on mutually relevant issues including campus expansions, on- and off-campus student housing, and parking and noise issues in areas near the campus.
Meetings: The Committee meets the third Monday every other month at 3 p.m. at the AT&T Conference Room, Genesis Technology Incubator, 700 Research Center Blvd., Fayetteville, AR 72701.
Urban Forestry Advisory Board (3 openings)
Seats available:
– One land development term ending 12/31/19
– One university representative term ending 12/31/19
– One community citizen at large term ending 12/31/19
Description: The purpose and intent of the committee is to advise the City Council on urban forestry and arboricultural related issues as an integral part of the city’s green infrastructure and to sit as the Wildland-Urban Interface: Firewise Advisory Board to advise the City Council on wildland and urban development related issues as an integral part of the city’s fire protection program and green infrastructure.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 4 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at City Hall.
