Fayetteville seeks 22 volunteers for boards and committees

UPDATE: An additional position was added on the Planning Commission due to commissioner Mike Wiederkehr’s recent election to the Fayetteville City Council. That opening is included below.

FAYETTEVILLE — City officials are looking to fill 22 positions on 15 of the city’s boards, commissions and committees.

The list of vacancies includes seats on the Advertising and Promotion Commission, Fayetteville Arts Council, Planning Commission and more.

All volunteers must be registered voters who reside within the Fayetteville city limits. Those who are not Fayetteville registered voters will need to provide proof of residency. All applicants must submit a new application for each board, commission or committee.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18.

After the application period ends, the Nominating Committee will look over the applicants and schedule interviews with selected individuals. The committee will then make their recommendations to the City Council for final approval. And yes, some board positions are nominated by the mayor, but the application process is the same.

Advertising and Promotion Commission (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One tourism industry term ending 03/31/26

Description:This group administers the Advertising and Promotion Fund, which is generated by the local hotel, motel, and restaurant (HMR) tax. The fund is used for the advertisement and promotion of the city and its environs, and/or construction, reconstruction, repair, maintenance, improvement, equipping, and operation of public recreation facilities.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Experience Fayetteville conference room.


Airport Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired Aeronautical term ending 12/31/25

Description: The purpose of this board is to seek both general and technical citizen input and assistance in airport functions, provide and encourage visionary planning and strong leadership for the airport, and assist the City Council in matters pertaining to the operation, improvement, extension, and maintenance of the Airport and other related facilities, property and easements.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the Fayetteville Executive Airport Conference Room.


Animal Services Advisory Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired Business Representative term ending 06/30/22

Description: This board acts in an advisory capacity on policy matters of the Animal Services Division, and works to stimulate and encourage communication with the community.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held the first Monday of the second month of each quarter at 6 p.m. in City Hall.


Board of Adjustments (2 openings)

Seats available:
– Two terms ending 03/31/25

Description: The Board of Adjustments hears and decides appeals where it is alleged there is error or ambiguity in any order, requirement, decision, interpretation, or determination made by the City Planner in the enforcement of Zoning Chapter 160-164.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 3:45 p.m. in City Hall.


Civil Service Commission (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One term ending 03/31/28

Description: This commission examines and establishes eligibility lists for appointments and promotions within the police and fire departments. The commission also acts upon appeals of disciplinary actions. Each commissioner must be a resident of the city for at least three years immediately preceding their appointment.
Meetings: Meetings are held whenever needed to administer tests and update eligibility lists. Meetings are generally held between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.


Community Development and Assistance Programs Advisory Board (2 openings)

Seats available:
– One Local Small Business term ending 03/31/25
– One Homelessness Services term ending 03/31/25

Description: This board aims to promote community involvement in the prioritization of community development initiatives; improve community awareness of the community development and public assistance programs provided by the city and advise the Community Resources Division and the City Council on the proposed use of Community Development Block Grant and other grant funds.

Meetings: Meetings are held monthly at City Hall.


Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals (2 openings)

Seats available:
– Two terms ending 03/31/27

Description: The purpose of this board is to hear and to act upon appeals regarding decisions made by the building inspector/superintendent. The board also hears appeals regarding construction materials to be used in new building construction and development. In addition, the board hears appeals regarding enforcement of the minimum housing standards for existing structures as specified in the standard building codes. Information regarding this board can also be found in the standard building code.
Meetings: The board does not meet on a regular basis, as the requests forwarded to this board are infrequent. Members are telephoned a week in advance of the meeting.


Environmental Action Committee (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired Community Citizen at Large term ending 12/31/22

Description: This committee works to address environmental concerns, to promote a safe and healthy environment, and to maintain the natural beauty of the environment within the city. It makes recommendations to other city committees and to the City Council.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in City Hall.


Fayetteville Arts Council (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired term ending 06/30/22

Description: Helps define the community’s identity and sense of place, promote social interaction, bring the arts into everyday life and memorialize the past while expressing shared values for the future.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month in City Hall.


Fayetteville Public Library Board of Trustees (2 openings)

Seats available:
– Two terms ending 04/01/27

Description: The purpose of the Board of Trustees is to provide leadership in performing the mission of the Library; to serve as a liaison between the library and the city; and to ensure the library meets the informational, educational and recreational needs of the community.
Meetings: Regular meetings are held on the third Monday of even-numbered months at 4 p.m at the Fayetteville Public Library.


Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired term ending 12/31/22

Description: This board recommends priorities for capital improvements and means for financing the same, and prepares an annual progress report on parks and recreation activities.
Meetings: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in City Hall. In addition to the regularly scheduled board meetings, there are committee meetings that occur on a regular basis.


PEG Advisory Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired term ending 06/30/23

Description: This board advises the City Council on issues related to public access, educational, and government (PEG) television use in the City of Fayetteville.
Meetings: Meets at least once every quarter at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.


Planning Commission (4 openings)

Seats available:
– One unexpired term ending 03/31/24
– Three terms ending 03/31/25

Description: The commission makes recommendations to the City Council regarding zoning changes, all annexations, and conditional uses. The commission also makes recommendations concerning amendments or changes to the Master Street Plan, General Land Use Plan, or other comprehensive planning elements.
Meets: Regular meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 5:30 p.m. in room 219 of the City Administration Building.


Public Facilities Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired term ending 12/31/22

Description: The Public Facilities Board is authorized to issue revenue bonds to finance residential housing, health care, and related facilities to persons of low or moderate income and for the elderly.
Meetings: Scheduled as needed.


Urban Forestry Advisory Board (1 opening)

Seats available:
– One unexpired Land Development term ending 12/31/23

Description: The purpose and intent of the committee is to advise the City Council on urban forestry and arboricultural related issues as an integral part of the city’s green infrastructure and to sit as the Wildland-Urban Interface: Firewise Advisory Board to advise the City Council on wildland and urban development related issues as an integral part of the city’s fire protection program and green infrastructure.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 4 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at City Hall.
