Fayetteville police began searching a wooded area near Holly Street and Oakland Avenue early Wednesday after a resident’s dog found what looked like human remains.

The area is located several blocks north of the University of Arkansas campus and is just north of North Street. It is in a residential area with nearby houses and apartments.

Police released a brief statement about the incident on the department’s social media.

“Early this morning, possible human remains were found in the 900 block of Holly Street in Fayetteville,” according to the post. “This is an active investigation and no more details will be shared at this time.”

KNWA spoke with Sgt. Anthony Murphy, spokesman for the Fayetteville Police Department, who said a jawbone was found in a patch of thick vegetation, and investigators have been combing through the woods. Murphy said the dog’s owner was walking at around 11 p.m. Tuesday when the remains were found.
