The city will give away free wood chip mulch to anyone who’d like to pick some up this month, while supplies last.
City officials said the mulch is created from branches and brush collected from local residents that are ground into wood chips, and that there is “an abundance” available at the moment.
The mulch can be picked up at the city’s compost site, located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave. from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, March 2.
The mulch is free and available to anyone until the supply is gone. A scoop of much (2.5 cubic yards) can be loaded into a truck bed or trailer, officials said, and there is no limit to the number of times someone can pick up a scoop.
“The mulch doesn’t undergo a composting period – it’s just straight wood chips,” said Brian Pugh, city Waste Reduction Manager. “The material is very good for mulching of areas in yards, berms around newly planted trees or just cover for moisture retention.
