A new alderman and one re-elected official were sworn in Tuesday night during a brief ceremony held before the start of the first City Council meeting of the year.

Alderwoman Adella Gray defeated Paul Phaneuf in the Ward 1 runoff election Tuesday night to secure a third term on the Fayetteville City Council.

Early votes are in and Alderwoman Adella Gray is ahead of Paul Phaneuf by 153 votes in the Ward 1 City Council runoff election.

Voters in south Fayetteville will decide between two very different candidates as they head to the polls today for the Ward 1 City Council runoff election.

The two candidates are very different.

Two of the three contested City Council races were decided after the final, unofficial results were released for the Nov. 4 general election.

Partial voting results were released early Wednesday in Washington County which show Paul Phanuef, Alderman Mark Kinion, and John La Tour are in the lead in their respective Fayetteville City Council races.

Peter Loris, Washington County Election Commissioner, said the delay was due to a high turnout of voters this election season, and a “glitch” discovered in the early voting computer system.

Aside from a governor, U.S. senator, and several state representatives, local voters will also elect a county judge, and multiple justices of the peace and city council members.

Ballots may be cast from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays through Nov. 3.

D’Andre Jones is one of six candidates running for Alderwoman Rhonda Adams’ soon-to-be-vacant Ward 4 seat.

Three candidates facing off to represent Ward 1 in the upcoming City Council election participated in a candidate forum Tuesday night.

Alderman Mark Kinion faced off against challenger Robert Patton in an hour-long question-and-answer-style forum moderated by Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce president Steve Clark.
